In 2006 The Traffic Investigation Unit attended 45 Fatal Road traffic Collisions, 22% of which were alcohol related. In addition the T.I.U. were called to 81 serious injury collisions, 11% of which were alcohol related. Although these statistics are only based on the 126 most serious collisions which occurred during the year, they make sobering reading.

Any amount of alcohol can impair reaction times and the consequences can be devastating, as the previous years statistics affirm.

There's no fast way to get alcohol out of your system - a shower, cup of coffee or other ways of `sobering up' will just not help.

The annual Anti-Drink/Drive campaign has now begun. This will involve random roadside vehicle stop checks to inspect the roadworthiness of the vehicle. In addition, the use of breathalysers will be stepped up to include tests at the road check points to drivers that officers believe to be under the influence of alcohol.

The Law: Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison, a minimum 2 year driving ban and a requirement to pass an extended driving test before the offender is able to drive legally again

An endorsement for a drink-driving offence remains on a driving licence for 11 years

Driving or attempting to drive whilst above the legal limit or unfit through drink carries a maximum penalty of 6 months' imprisonment, a fine of up to £5,000 and a minimum 12 months driving ban

The penalty for refusing to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis is a maximum 6 months' imprisonment, up to £5,000 fine and a driving ban of at least 12 months
