As welcoming in a New Year often means making resolutions, Warwickshire Police is asking members of the public to consider making some special New Year’s resolutions to help reduce crime.
“We all need to make a few New Year’s resolutions that will help act as reminders to ourselves,” said Force Crime Prevention Manager, Martyn Stephens.
Suggested resolutions include:
"I will not leave my Sat Nav in my car. I will also remove the cradle from the windscreen and wipe away any mark left every time I leave my car."
"I will not leave anything on view in my car."
"I will always remember to lock my car up when I leave it, even if it’s just for a few moments."
"I will make sure that all my property is security marked so, if stolen and later recovered, it can be returned to me. This could also help to secure a conviction for the person who stole my property."
"I will make sure I always lock my doors and windows, even when I am inside my house."
"I will get into the routine of going round and checking all my doors and windows to make sure they are locked, before I go up to bed at night."
"I will make sure I do not leave the keys in the door lock and will also make sure the keys are stored in a safe place, out of sight of anyone looking through the window or the letter box."
"When I go away I will ask a neighbour or a friend to look after my house and check it every day."
"I will invest in some timer switches for lights in my house, and will set them to switch on automatically when I am away from home, so that my house looks occupied."
He adds: “This may look a long list of resolutions, but most of them are very simple tasks, which are easy to get into the habit of completing. By making these part of your security routine you will greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of house burglary, or car crime.”
“New Year is a prime time to turn over a new leaf and make sure you start to take responsibility for these simple actions which will help protect you and your property from harm and help reduce crime in Warwickshire.”
