Special Constables
Warwickshire Police is currently searching for a special kind of person to help us in the policing of your local community. Today, more than ever, we need everyone’s help. Why not give us yours in the most direct and practical way of all – by joining us as a Volunteer Police Special.
Do you like being involved with people? Are you looking for voluntary work that isn’t all committees but actually brings you into contact with basic human problems? Would you enjoy working as a responsible and respected member of a closely-knit and well-organised team? If so, your local Police will be glad to welcome you as a Special Constable at one of their police stations.
It would be hard to find any other community service that gives you so much interest, excitement and variety. You may find yourself taking part in a major investigation, helping a lost child, arresting a thief, breaking up a fight at closing time, ensuring the safety of carnivals and parades, or simply being that important and reassuring figure walking around a local housing estate.
As a Special Constable you have the same powers as regular officers and wear the same uniform. You will receive initial and on-gong training as well as gaining experience and confidence by working closely with regular officers and other Specials.
Hours are flexible but usually Specials carry out a four-hour shift each week, more if they can spare the time. Uniform is provided free and out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed.
To be a Special you must be a British or Commonwealth citizen, reasonably fit and in good health, and aged over 18. Naturally you must not be an associate of criminals and you must be of good character. (There are also a few occupations, which may mean you will be ineligible due to a possible conflict of interest between your police and private role).
If you would like to learn more about the role as well as speak to current specials, contact a member of the recruitment team on 01926 415052.
