THE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM RESPOND TO COMMUNITY CONCERNS OVER ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

On Saturday 12th July 2008 at approximately 1120 am two officers from Kenilworth Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team attended Albion Street near to the One Stop Convenience Store. This was in response to residents concerns surrounding the behaviour of individuals.

Two uniformed officers arrived at the scene on mountain bikes and quickly identified a group of young adults, who had been drinking alcohol and were now behaving in a disorderly manner. One male was seen by Police to urinate against a wall, abusive language was also heard coming from one of the males. This behaviour was in the presence and hearing range of other members of the public.

Officers dismounted from their bikes, approached the two males placing both under arrest for using disorderly language and behaviour. Further Kenilworth Safer Neighbourhood Officers then arrived at the location in Police vehicles to help with transportation to Warwickshire Police Station's. One of the males was detained in a cell for a significant period until he was sober enough to be dealt with. Both males were issued with £80.00 on the spot fines.

Following on from this incident the Kenilworth S N T officers were made aware by One Stop Store employees of a disturbance that had occurred inside their at 0755 hours Saturday 12 July involving another one of the drunken males. Police enquires showed that one of the drunken males was standing outside the store, but on him seeing an unconnected male entering One Stop he decided to pursue him, the drunken male who was white of a large build and tall entered the store, and approached the male from behind near to the sweet counter. He has then grabbed hold of the males head and aggressively gripped and yanked his hair downwards, the drunken male was also seen to punch him in the face. This attack stopped promptly as a One Stop Employee approached both of them. The victim however of this assault did not contact the Police, for reasons which are unknown. Police however had evidence of disorderly behaviour that had occurred but no identifiable victim.

Sgt Bosworth however decided to take positive action in locating, and questioning the offender using arrest powers under the Public Order Act. Police intelligence ascertained the name of the offender and his current Kenilworth address.

An early morning arrest was then planned to take place on Sunday 13th July 2008. Pc MORLAND and Pc OSBORNE then attended and after banging on the front door numerous times woke the offender up and arrested him. The offender was questioned at Leamington Spa Police Station where he admitted disorderly behaviour and was issued with a Police Caution.

Sgt 0935 Stuart Bosworth head of the Kenilworth Safer Neighbourhood Team said "Members of the community should not be subjected to this sort of mindless and inconsiderate behaviour. It is unacceptable and we will continue to work with the local community in order to identify and prosecute those who wish to cause alarm or distress".
