Fighting Crime in North Warwickshire
- Warwick District’s CCTV network is one of only two in the UK which meet the 2005 British Standard. The system was extended to the Parish Gardens, south of Leamington, as part of a package of measures to improve the area.
- Other steps included setting up a dispersal zone, restricted drinking zone, improved lighting, landscaping and a higher police presence. Anti-social behavioural problems have now been significantly reduced in that area.
- The district has introduced Operation Meriden, to target local offenders committing aquisitive crime. Suspects are visited, motives such as drug dependence are investigated and help is offered. This high profile initiative may soon be adopted in other areas.
- Drink-related crime is being tackled through an Alcohol & Violent Crime Group. In Operation Acquit, multiagency visits are made to pubs and other premises by police, council and other authorities to tackle violent crime, ensuring that door staff are properly licenced and no-one is drinking under age.
