Mediation and Community Support

An independent service - Enabling people to make workable solutions in difficult situations What is Mediation? Mediation is a way of resolving conflicts or disputes in which the people involved seek to find their own mutually agreed solutions to resolve the problem in a fair way with the help of the impartial mediators. When can mediation help? Any dispute, conflict, disagreement or difficult situation between two or more people can potentially be mediated. Some of the common causes of disputes that we have dealt with include noise, children’s behaviour, boundaries, communication breakdown, animals, upkeep of property / gardens and misunderstandings. What are the benefits of mediation? Mediation focuses on improving understanding and facilitating communication between people in conflict. It can help those involved gain a better appreciation of the issues, resulting in improved relationships between them. Mediation is a constructive and common sense approach which produces practical, workable and realistic solutions. Mediation is provided free to the general public and is a much quicker and a less stressful process than other options. It is less risky as parties only settle when they are satisfied with the agreement. This is unlike going to court where they take the risk of having the judge decide against them and losing their case. Who are the mediators? Mediators are people who have completed an in-depth training programme in mediation and have been approved by our service. They work in pairs, selected for their complementary skills and knowledge. They are impartial and won’t take sides in any dispute. They will not blame or tell people what to do. Mediators use their skills and experience to help people communicate and look at new ideas for solutions. What do mediators do? Mediators visit people separately in their own homes, hear what has happened and explain how mediation works. If everyone is happy to continue, they will arrange further meetings. They will help people identify the issues to be sorted out and to look at ideas for solutions to see if they are realistic and will work. Any joint meeting will be arranged at a neutral venue. Mediators guide the people through a constructive problem solving approach and draw out the differences in a helpful way so that solutions can be found. If you have a problem that you would like to solve, remember, mediation is Free, Confidential, Non threatening. A voluntary process. Provided by an independent organisation Our mediators are trained to recognise when mediation is not the answer, for instance, when someone's safety or human rights are at risk, or when a higher authority decision is needed. At MACS, we focus on solutions. It’s not about determining who is right or wrong… it’s about helping people and organisations involved in disputes find solutions….. solutions that address their interests, needs and concerns. At MACS, you have control of making the best of the situation. There are no losers. Only winners. Mediation-it’s the way to go. Training and Volunteering Opportunities We offer a quality training course in Mediation Skills developed by Mediation UK and accredited through the National Open College Network. If you are interesting in learning more, contact our friendly staff for details and find out more about volunteering with us. How can I arrange mediation? Don’t be afraid to get in touch and have a chat with our friendly trained staff to see if we can help. Anyone can approach MACS on your behalf, Housing departments, the Police, and the Citizens Advice Bureau often refer cases, or you can approach us yourself. You can ask for the help of mediators even if you have not talked to your neighbour about it.
