Operation Aughton brings misery to Coventry criminals
On Wednesday 20th January 2010 your Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team led a joint Force operation in Coventry involving 27 Police officers. Over the Christmas week a crime team from Coventry stole large quantities of diesel from a company based in Cubbington . CCTV along with other intelligence pointed towards 5 well known criminals all living on the West Midlands Police area.

Warrants were obtained and 5 addresses were entered simultaneously. This operation was successful in disrupting the lives of these individuals and leaving them in no doubt that Warwickshire Police will not tolerate this type of activity by continuing to take the necessary steps to protect the community from harm.

During the operation property was recovered in relation to this particular offence as well as other offences including motorcycles from recent burglaries. Two Ford tipper lorries used in the commission of this crime have been confiscated.
The investigations are still ongoing with further arrests and searches will be carried out in the near future.

The Cubbington Police post in Queen street is now officially opened following a ceremony on Tuesday 19th January.

The latest Crime Stats have been released nationally today and show Warwickshire's figures as being are extremely promising. For details go to this web link:

KEEP ALL WINDOWS AND DOORS LOCKED WHEN YOUR ROOM IS VACANT.

Even if your only going to the kitchen/bathroom for a couple of minutes. It only takes that amount of time for an offender to commit an offence. Laptops have been stolen, which contained coursework.

Driving advice
All phone calls distract from driving.

Research demonstrates that reaction times for drivers using a handheld phone are 30 per cent worse than for driving under the influence of alcohol at the legal limit and using a mobile phone while driving means you are four times more likely to crash.
It is illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving. The penalty is £60 and 3 penalty points. If the case goes to court, it's a maximum fine of £1,000 (£2,500 if driving a bus, coach or heavy goods vehicle), discretionary disqualification and 3 points.

Callers should hang up too

Callers also play an important role. If you ring someone on their mobile phone who turns out to be driving when they answer, say you'll call them later and hang up.
Mobile phones distract you when driving (RoSPA)

Drivers who use a mobile phone, whether hand-held or hands-free:

  • are much less aware of whats happening on the road around them

  • fail to see road signs

  • fail to maintain proper lane position and steady speed

  • are more likely to, tailgate the vehicle in front

  • react more slowly and take longer to brake

  • are more likely to enter unsafe gaps in traffic

  • feel more stressed and frustrated

I need to use my phone for work. What should I do?

Go to voicemail and pick up messages when safely parked.

When can you make or receive calls using a hand-held phone?

  • You are allowed to call 999 or 112 in response to a genuine emergency where it is unsafe or impracticable to stop.

  • You can use a phone when safely parked.

  • You can use a phone when you are a passenger.

Using other devices for sending or receiving data while driving is also an offence, that includes Blackberries and PDAs if they have a mobile phone incorporated.

More drivers are using hand-held mobile phones (TRL 2009 London Study)

More drivers are using hand-held mobile phones than before tougher penalties were introduced two years ago, the Transport Research Laboratory has said.

In 2006, a total of 166,880 fixed penalty notices were issued for driving while using a hands-held mobile, compared with 122,000 in 2007, according to Home Office figures
