Team effort catches burglars
Three local people were arrested in Leamington (Tuesday November 21) following a burglary at Taylor Ave in Lillington.
The arrests occurred as a direct result of the public working in co-operation with the North Leamington Safer Neighbourhood Team.
During the proceeding month, several burglaries occurred in the area and in response, safer neighbourhood officers had distributed crime prevention leaflets to householders and asked residents to report any suspicious activity immediately. Early on November 21, a burglary was carried out in Taylor Avenue when the offender(s) stole 250 euros from a wallet. Officers from the safer neighbourhood team, supported by reactive officers, contacted key people in the community including Warwick District Council's CCTV unit and local Post Offices asking them to inform police immediately if any euros were attempted to be cashed.
Later that morning, police received information that a man was attempting to cash euros at a post office in the area. Police attended immediately and arrested a twenty-six year old man on suspicion of burglary.
A twenty-eight year old man and a twenty-three year old woman were arrested shortly afterwards. All three were in police custody and interviewed. A local house was searched following the arrests and goods including a camera, a whisky bottle full of money, credit cards and a sports bag were recovered.
Sgt Paul Greewal, head of the North Leamington Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "If it wasn't for the public's help with this investigation, these arrests wouldn't have happened so quickly. I would like to thank the member of the public that alerted Police to the attempted transaction in the post office.
On January 2nd 2007 a male Offender involved was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and a female involved to 6 months in prison.
