JINGLE BELLS. LOOK AFTER YOUR PURSE
An initiative aimed at reducing purse and bags thefts was launched in Stratford-upon-Avon yesterday at the annual Christmas Light Switch On.
At the event, the Stratford-upon-Avon Town Safer Neighbourhood Team handed out approximately 150 free mini bells to shoppers to attach to purses or bags. These are designed to act as a a reminder to keep purses and handbags safe whilst out shopping, and to give an audible warning to alert the owner if their purse or bag is tampered with.
It is hoped that the bells with help to deter "purse dipping' during the festive period.
The team will be out in the town centre on other dates on the lead up to Christmas handing out the mini bells.
Town Sergeant, Lucy Sewell says, "We want to make people aware that purse thefts have taken place not only in shops, but outside on the street as well, and we hope that these bells will encourage shoppers to be more vigilant.
"Be aware that offenders normally work in pairs and may bump into you or put their hands in your pocket to steal items. If you become aware of anybody invading your personal space, keep hold of your purse or handbag, move away from them and alert shop staff, a security guard or a police officer."
There are also some simple measures that people can take to protect themselves from this type of crime.
To protect yourself against purse or bag theft, you should:
? Never leave your bag open or unattended, such as on the back of a shopping trolley or pushchair ? Always make sure your bag is securely shut by using the fasteners provided ? If your bag has a strap, wear it across your body with any flaps facing inwards, and hold it close to your body ? Never put your bag on the floor to look at something on shop shelves or when trying on clothes in changing rooms ? If you do not have a bag, hold your purse or wallet close to your body or carry it in an inside pocket if you have one ? Avoid carrying large amounts of cash ? Only keep items in your bag that are needed ? Keep your cash card separate from your chequebook
Police are also encouraging anyone who notices any suspicious activity to call Stratford on Avon Police on 01789 414111, ideally as it is happening.
