A day in a life of Police Community Support Officer Sarah Bailey
8am I arrive for duty; self brief from briefing sheets and receive the taskings for the day from Sergeant Sewell. Initially I have been tasked to carry out house to house in the Shottery area for some vehicle crime that has occurred. I walk out from Stratford Police station towards Shottery and begin my house-to-house checks to see if anyone has seen or heard anything during the times the vehicle crime has occurred. This takes some time, as there are a lot of houses to cover today! Plus this gives me the direct contact with the community and I can engage with those whom I speak to, this always goes down well.
1030am I arrive back at the station and have some refreshment and off out I go again! This time on proactive patrol around Stratford Town centre: looking for graffiti, drinking in designated places and nuisance youths.
I liaise with Stratford District CCTV about any possible graffiti they proactively look for too.
Walking through the town I walk through local shops and speak to the retailers about any concerns or information they have. I stop and speak to shoppers and assist a tourist in finding Shakespeare’s Birthplace.
1pm The Force Communications Centre receive a call about a shoplifter in the Town; I am not far from the location and walk to the shop. The Police constables are already there and I assist with this incident: seizing the stolen property, taking it back to Stratford Police station and booking it into detained property. I return to CCTV, to assist the Police officers, to see if there is any CCTV in relation to this incident.
3pm I take a brisk walk up to the Maybird Centre, Birmingham Road. I visit some of the retailers in this area, providing high visibility in the area. I speak to some children about what I am doing and answer the question “Have you ever chased after anyone?” I answer “No not yet!”
4pm What a busy day! I de-brief with Sergeant Sewell, informing her about what I found out from the house to house this morning, and information I received from speaking to retailers in the town. This is noted and documented on our Police systems and I book off duty and go home. Tomorrow is going to be another busy day with a school visit and town meeting to attend.
