A multi agency meeting involving Southam Town Council, youth service, Stratford District Council and Southam Safer Neighbourhood Team was held at The Grange to look at youth provision in the Southam town. Anti-social behaviour, drinking, drugs and littering were mentioned from concerned residents in the Mayfield Road area, letters will be sent from Kully Takhar (anti-social behaviour officer from Stratford District Council) to youths who have been in the area of Mayfield Rd (BMX Track) and youths using vehicles in an anti-social manner.

Police in Southam have successfully applied for the of a dispersal zone in Southam to cover the areas of Wattons Lane, Park Lane, Southam recreational grounds to include the litch gate into St James Church, St James Church graveyard and Southam library. The order is for 6 months, effective from 12th April - 12th October 2010. The powers, granted under Section 30 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003, allow officers in uniform to instruct groups or individuals in a group of two or more to leave the area and not to return within a specified time. The direction can be given by both Police Constables and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), provided that the persons in question do not live within the area of the dispersal zone. Officers from the Southam Safer Neighbourhood Team had noticed a rise in reports of anti-social behaviour during the last 12 months. The reports mainly involve groups of young males and females gathering in large numbers in the area between 5pm - 1am and engaging in nuisance behaviour including drinking alcohol. The extra powers afforded by the dispersal zone will help the team reduce anti-social behaviour within the designated area.
APS Cuthbertson from the Southam Safer Neighbourhood Team stated "Many residents raised concerns regarding anti-social behaviour in Park Lane, Wattons Lane, the recreational grounds and the library. Many incidents were reported to us regarding anti-social behaviour, this became a safer neighbourhood priority at the last community forum meeting. We conducted operations to deal with the issue and felt the dispersal order would give us the powers to deal effectively with anti-social behaviour not covered by other legislation and increases the power we have to deal effectively with individuals. The powers will be used proportionality and appropriately in all situations and it is down to the discretion of the officer involved as to when it is appropriate to use the powers." Full details of the dispersal zone, along with other news and details about the Southam Safer Neighbourhood Team can be found on their website and details of the dispersal zone will also be displayed within the local area. BOGUS CALLERS
Beware bogus callers and leaving doors and windows open during fine weather.

As the warmer weather arrives, Police are asking people in Warwickshire not to tempt the opportunist burglar by leaving doors and windows unlocked.

Detective Inspector Martyn Stephens said “Please do not give opportunist burglars the chance to steal your hard earned money or valuables by sneaking into your home unnoticed through unlocked doors.
"It only takes a minute to walk through an unlocked door and steal your handbag, car keys or other valuables. Please get into the habit of locking your door not only at night but also if you are watching TV or going out for a few minutes, even into the garden.”

Detective Inspector Stephens also warns residents to beware of bogus callers.

The message to be vigilant against anyone who appears unexpectedly at your door offering to do work for you, follows the report of two men who attempted to talk their way into a Leamington home. At approximately 4.30 on Thursday afternoon, April 22, an elderly woman who lives on Morse Rd, Whitnash was sitting in her living room when she became aware of someone in the kitchen. The man stated that he had surplus tarmac and offered to tarmac her driveway. She declined and he left. Nothing appears to have been stolen.

DOORSTEP CODE
*Always put the security chain on the door before opening it.
*Ask the caller who they are and where they are from.
*Ask to see some form of identification - take the card from them and examine it. *Check with the company who they claim to be from, using a telephone number out of the telephone directory, not the number on the card, as this could be answered by an accomplice.
*If you have any doubts tell the caller you want to make an appointment for them to call back at a more convenient time - when you will be able to have a friend or relative with you. Genuine callers will understand and will be happy to comply with these arrangements.
*You do not have to let a stranger into your home - even if they claim it is an emergency.
A "Nominated Neighbour" notice is now available free from Southam Police Station. The card is held up at the window when uninvited callers come to your house and tells them that you do not open the door to strangers and advises them to contact your nominated neighbour who will go through the necessary checks before returning with them to your home.

WARWICKSHIRE POLICE CLIMBS 20 PLACES IN SURVEY DETAILING PUBLIC CONFIDENCE IN FORCES COUNTRYWIDE
Warwickshire Police is pleased to report that it has risen to position 20 out of 42 forces, in public confidence. The most recent British Crime Survey results shows a significant rise of 20 places since June 2009, when the force was placed 40th.

Commenting on this achievement, Chief Superintendent Mak Chishty said: “In six months Warwickshire Police has risen by 20 places. This is excellent progress in a short space of time, particularly as all forces are working towards improving their performance in this area. “I am confident that this performance will continue into 2010 and further demonstrates the commitment of local councils and ourselves to protect communities of Warwickshire from harm.”
Work currently taking place to further improve public confidence in communities includes:
* Continued engagement by Safer Neighbourhood Teams around crimes, to increase interaction with local communities and identify and deal with issues causing
concern locally.
* The use of data to identify and address areas where further progress in public confidence is required.
* Police and partner agency interaction to improve public confidence, via marketing and communication campaigns.

YOUTH CRIME FALLING IN WARWICKSHIRE
Warwickshire’s Youth Justice Service is welcoming a fall in the number of young people in the county becoming involved in crime.

According to the latest figures from the county council-led service, there was a 20 per cent reduction in the number of under 18-year-olds becoming involved in crime this year (2009-10) compared to last year (2008-09).

There was also a 22 per cent reduction in the number of offences committed by young people in the county, compared to last year.

In addition, the number of under 18-year-olds who entered the youth justice system for the first time decreased by ten per cent this year (2009-10) compared to last year.
Lesley Tregear, Head of Warwickshire’s Youth Justice Service, said: “It is pleasing to see crime involving young people fall in Warwickshire and highlights the work of the Youth Justice Service and partners in reducing the risk of offending and re-offending.

“We run programmes such as reparation providing young people who have offended with an opportunity to make amends to the community or an individual for crime committed - and parenting schemes like Parents Matter.

“We have also developed educational tools such as the ‘Actions Bring Consequences’ books for schools, aimed at helping to prevent offending.”

A NEW RECORD FOR FINGERPRINT IDENTIFICATIONS IN WARWICKSHIRE

This is the highest ever-annual total, exceeding the previous record set in 2006-7 of 707 identifications.

Amanda Harrison, Head of Warwickshire Police Fingerprint Bureau said: “This is a fantastic result; the Fingerprint Bureau and Development Laboratory should be proud of their performance, commitment and professionalism.
“We recognise that this year’s excellent performance is a reflection of the hard work being put in forcewide, to further protect communities from harm.

“The Fingerprint Bureau would like to thank all call handlers and response officers for the essential advice they offer to victims regarding scene preservation. Thanks are also extended to the Crime Scene Investigators for their work at the crime scene.”

LOTTERY SCAMS
It has been brought to our attention that several residents in the Southam area have recently received mailings advising them of a unclained prize.
If you receive an unsolicited phone call, letter, or email, telling you that you have 'won', or been 'awarded' money or other prizes, then beware. You may have been targeted by a fraudster and if you show an interest in collecting your 'winnings' you will be asked to pay money in advance for administration fees - there are no 'winnings', you can only lose out. Most notifications of this sort come from overseas.Remember the following rules if you receive a notification of prize winnings so you won't be caught out: You can't win a prize in a lottery you haven't bought or been given a ticket for. Legitimate lotteries don't ask for funds in advance of paying out prize money. Never provide personal identity information to a company or person you do not know.
