Theft of drain covers
There are obvious dangers of missing/stolen gully covers and the potential for them to cause serious harm to road users as well as the cost of replacement. The scale of the problem is such that since June 2011 in South Warwickshire there have been 79 incidents of gully covers being stolen often in large numbers. A total of 499 have been replaced at a cost to the council of £112,250.00. Police are encouraging the public to report missing covers to the county highways and Police, and for any suspicious activity witnessed or intelligence relating to thefts or disposal of these items. There are a number of leads that are currently being investigated, and the issue has been identified as a Community Priority for the Alcester South SNT team.
