Christmas drink drive campaign to be launched in Warwickshire
The national campaign, which the force participates as part of Warwickshire County Council's speed reduction partnership, features posters portraying individual warnings about the consequences of drinking and driving which will be displayed throughout the county. There will also be a local radio advertising campaign.
As well as promoting the anti drink/drive message and carrying out roadside breath tests the force has produced road safety leaflets which will be handed to foreign drivers and residents to explain the principle of the "fatal four", the top causes of death and serious injury on the roads.
These are speed; alcohol/drugs; not wearing seat belts; and distractions (for example talking on a mobile phone whilst driving).
Chief Inspector Chris Lewis, who heads the force's Operations Task Force, said: "As usual we will be carrying out roadside breath checks in all five boroughs and districts throughout December and I anticipate that we will breathalyse even more people this year than we did in 2008.
"We want to make sure that everyone is made aware of the dangers of driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs
"We are aware that there are many people who live, work and travel through Warwickshire who do not understand the English language or the laws of the road so we are making a special effort to reach them and make their journeys safer this Christmas.
"There are strong Polish and Portuguese communities in Warwickshire so we have had the leaflets translated into those languages as well as Pashtu and Farsi.
"We hope to add other languages in the future in the hope of protecting more people from harm on our roads."
Chief Inspector Mike Slemensek, the force diversity manager, has welcomed the initiative.
He said: "Warwickshire Police takes every opportunity to reach all members of the community to protect them from harm and by providing this information in their own language we can make sure that they fully understand the rules of the road and the dangers of ignoring them. These leaflets have been welcomed by a number of local community group leaders who appreciate what we are doing."
