Don't lose your Sat-Nav to thieves
Don't lose your Sat-Nav to thieves With satellite navigation equipment becoming more popular with motorists, it’s also becoming more popular with criminals.

Where it’s portable keep it safe by taking it, together with the support cradle and suction pads, with you when you leave the car.

And remember to wipe away any suction pad marks left on the windscreen or dashboard as thieves will look out for these.
Don’t leave the equipment in the glove compartment – thieves will usually check there first.

You can also help by following these tips:

When choosing a satellite navigation system look for one with anti-theft security features.
Mark your satellite navigation equipment system with your postcode and house number or your vehicle registration number or another unique number, using special security markers.
Make a note of the make, model and serial number of the equipment and keep the note somewhere safe – not in the car. Consider recording this information on one of the commercially available asset registers.
Don’t leave anything on view in your car. Thieves are opportunists and it only takes them moments to break into your car.
Lock all doors and windows, not forgetting the sunroof, when leaving your car.
Never leave the keys in the ignition when the car is unattended, even while you’re paying for petrol.
Use car parks that are part of the police-approved Safer Parking Scheme. Approved car parks display the official ‘Park Mark’ sign. For details, visit: www.saferparking.com

SCAM Warning: Obtaining information
All, the following is for awareness.

SCAM: Obtaining information.

Modus Operandi:

Caller states "Hello this is #NAME# from the Security and Fraud department for #CARD COMPANY#. My employee number is #NUMBER#. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I am calling to verify details. This would be on your #CARD COMPANY# issued by #BANK#. Did you purchase a #ITEM# for #VALUE# from #LOCATION#

The usual response is of course, No.

Continued:

In that case a credit to your account will be issued and this payment halted. This is a company that we have been watching for some time as most of the transactions flag up and require verification. Your Credit will be sent to you in cheque form before your next statement to #ADDRESS#. Is this your correct address?

The usual response is yes, if no, the caller may even ask for a new address.
Continued:

A fraud investigation will be started by ourselves and the police, if you have any questions, you should call the 0800 number on the back of your card, select security and Fraud and quote ref #SIX DIGIT REFERENCE NUMBER SUPPLIED#

The caller will then ask for the 7 digits off the back of the card in the signature box, for ownership verification purposes.

the caller will then ask if there are any questions, the usual response is No. They then end the conversation and hang up.

VISA/MASTERCARD are both aware of this scam, incidents of this nature should be reported to their (genuine) fraud department.

Main Points
The Caller may never state the card number
The caller does not ask for a PIN
The six digit reference number is false
If the caller already knows your title, name, address and card number, by giving them the numbers off the back of the card (especially the last 3) will give them access to purchase goods over the internet on your behalf.

Summary:

NEVER GIVE INFORMATION TO UNKNOWN CALLERS, EVEN IF THEY CLAIM TO BE REPRESENTING BANKING INSTITUTIONS. IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT A BANK TRANSACTION, CALL THE BANK DIRECT.

Smartwater your personal belongings
Smartwater your personal belongings Property marking helps police reunite you with any stolen property and is also a real deterrent to thieves.

If an item is marked a thief will probably not steal it because it will be much harder to sell. After all, when there is lots of unmarked property around it's easier to steal that instead.

Mark your property
SmartWater is a chemically based forensic dye likened in concept to DNA profiling and unique to the registered owner. It is colourless, odourless and once applied to valuables such as computers, Hi Fi equipment, cameras, DVD or Video players, it is virtually impossible to remove.

If an offending burglar gets SmartWater on them, it is almost impossible to get off and immediately shows up if that person is examined with ultra violet light in a custody suite. A mark just the size of a pinhead is enough for that person to be linked to a crime scene.

SmartWater can be purchased direct from www.smartwater.co.uk

Because each application of SmartWater has its own DNA code, it means that any criminals who are later arrested can be linked forensically to the crime scenes.

Operation Crunch
Operation Crunch Christmas party season can be a fun and enjoyable time for everyone but while you plan to stay away overnight you can also take a few simple steps to ensure you have safe stay.

While you may take precautions to protect your home while you are away, always remember to protect yourself and your belongings in new surroundings.

Take the following precautions to protect your safety and valuables in hotels or motels:

Don't answer the door in a hotel or motel room without verifying who it is. Always use the peephole to identify any callers. If a person claims to be an employee, call the front desk and ask if someone from the staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.

When returning to your hotel or motel late in the evening, use the main entrance of the hotel. Be observant and look around before entering parking lots.

Close the door securely whenever you are in your room and use all of the locking devices provided.

Ensure that all windows and sliding doors are locked.

Always close your curtains at night.

Don't needlessly display guest room keys in public or carelessly leave them on restaurant tables, at the swimming pool, or other places where they can be easily stolen.

Don't draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewellery.
When alone, do not enter elevators with strangers if you do not feel comfortable. Wait for another elevator.

Never announce your hotel room number and never invite strangers to your room.

Do not leave cash or valuables in your room. Safety deposit boxes are provided at the front desk or your room may be equipped with an in-room safe. Call the front desk for instructions. If the room has a safe then use it, change the code daily but memorise it, do not write it down.

Don't leave valuables in your vehicle.

To make the hotel room look occupied and to discourage thieves leave the TV or radio on and put the “Do not disturb” sign/light on when the room is empty.

A security cable to lock a lap top computer to a piece of furniture while out of the room could deter thieves.

Make a record of all makes, models and serial numbers of electronic and electrical equipment and if possible take a photograph of each piece of equipment and of valuables like jewellery.

If something is stolen report it to the hotel management but also visit the local police station and file a crime report. Keep a copy of this and the documents from the hotel as they will be needed to claim on any insurance.

Your household insurance may have an “away from home” cover and a claim may be possible on your home insurance policy.

The Operation Crunch Intelligence Hotline phone number is 01926 415247. This phone number is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for members of the public to provide information about car criminals and burglars operating within their community.

Anyone who wishes to report a crime should continue to call 01926 415000. In an emergency, if you are witnessing a crime in progress, call 999.
