Make a New Year's Resolution For Operation Crunch
"We all need to make a few New Year's resolutions, which will act as a reminder to ourselves." Said Superintendent Mak Chishty.
Among the resolutions we are being urged to make are:
"I will not leave my Sat Nav in my car, and will remove the mounting stalk from the windscreen everytime I leave my car."
"I will not leave anything on view in my car."
"I will always remember to lock my car up when I leave it, even if I am nipping somewhere for a few moments."
"I will make sure that all my property is security marked, so that if it is stolen and later recovered it will be possible to prove it is stolen. This could also help to secure a conviction for the person who stole my property."
"I will make sure I always lock my doors and windows, even when I am inside my house."
"I will get into the routine of going round and checking all my doors and windows to make sure they are locked, before I go up to bed at night."
"I will make sure I do not leave the keys in the door lock and will also make sure the keys are stored in a safe place, out of sight of anyone looking through the window or the letter box."
"When I go away I will make sure a neighbour or a friend looks after my house and checks it every day."
"I will invest in some timer switches for lamps in my house, and will set them to turn on when I am away from home, so that my house looks occupied."
Supt Chishty added, "This may look a long list of resolutions, but most of them are very simple tasks, which it is easy to get into the habit of doing as a matter of course. By adopting these habits as routine you will greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of house burglary, or car crime."
"For example, nationally a third of all house burglaries are because householders have left doors or windows open overnight. While car crime would be greatly reduced if people would make sure that they removed the temptation for thieves by not leaving anything on show inside their vehicles.
"New year is a prime time to turn over a new leaf and make sure you start to take responsibility for these simple actions which will help to keep you safe and also reduce crime in Warwickshire."

Doorstep Code For Uninvited Calls
Police remind householders to always use the Doorstep Code for uninvited callers
~Always put the security chain on the door before opening it
~Ask the caller who they are and where they are from
~Ask to see some form of identification - take the card from them and examine it
~Check with the company who they claim to be from, using a telephone number out of the telephone directory, not the number on the card, as this could be answered by an accomplice
~If you have any doubts tell the caller you want to make an appointment for them to call back at a more convenient time - when you will be able to have a friend or relative with you. Genuine callers will understand and will be happy to comply with these arrangements
~You do not have to let a stranger into your home - even if they claim it Is an emergency

The Community Safety Department have produced a "Nominated Neighbour" notice which is available free from all the enquiry desks at all Warwickshire Police Stations. The card is held up at the window when uninvited callers come to your house and tells them that you do not open the door to strangers and advises them to contact your nominated neighbour who will go through the necessary checks before returning with them to your home.
