Cycling on the pavement leaflet campaign

Many people do not realize it is an offence to ride their bikes on the pavement, this is covered by Sect 72 Highways Act 1835.

To highlight this there will be a leaflet campaign in Rugby town centre to inform cyclists. Starting on Tuesday 7th October it will run for two weeks and officers will be handing out leaflets to those who cycle on the footpath. While there are those who consider it dangerous to ride on the road it must be realized that cycling on the pavement puts vulnerable pedestrians at risk from cyclists who choose to ride on the pavements.

Allied to this will be leaflets that inform cyclists of the lighting requirements for bicycles as there are a large amount of cyclists who use their machines with limited or no lighting at all; this could lead to unnecessary accidents for all vulnerable road users and motorists.

After this period any cyclists who continue to ride on the pavement face the prospect of a £30 fixed penalty notice. If you don't wish to receive a fine then the message is clear... Do not ride your bicycle on the pavement
