BID to reduce theft from vehicles a success
Rugby BID is at the forefront of reducing crime in Rugby Town Centre and the latest figures show that theft from vehicles is falling significantly as CCTV and Rangers continue to deter criminal activity in the town centre.
Theft of items from vehicles has fallen consecutively during the last two years, since the BID Operation began. In 2006-7 theft from vehicles dropped by 62% and for 2007-8 it has fallen by another 54%. This considerable reduction has been a result of work carried out by the BID in conjunction with Warwickshire Police. The high visibility of the Rangers coupled with improved camera coverage around the town centre has been a major factor in the reduction. Work has also been carried out to inform the public to keep their valuables safe with information left on car windscreens if valuable items have been noticeable through the windows.
Comments from shoppers and visitors in Rugby certainly show that the safety of their vehicles is not something that causes them concern. Andrew Gibbs who works in the town centre said, “There are plenty of cameras around and they are a good deterrent. I don’t have any problems leaving my car in town.” Visitors to the area, Margaret Bevin and Tom Scallon also said they had no concerns over parking and security in Rugby. Margaret, who visits Rugby Town once a week, said, “I’ve not experienced any problems and it’s not something that I worry about.”
“The very fact that people parking up in Rugby town centre do not have any fears or worries about leaving their vehicles in the car-parks show that this is a crime in decline,” said Aftab Gaffar, Operations Director for Rugby BID. “The vigilance of both the CCTV Operators and the Rangers, and our work alongside the Police, play a huge part in keeping this crime at bay.”
