Warning after elderly man hands over cash to bogus council workers

Incident 254, June 15

Police are warning householders to be on their guard after an elderly man in Nuneaton was conned out of cash by a bogus council worker.

The man, who is in his 80s and from Nuneaton, handed over a sum of money to two men who said that they were from the council and that he was going to get new doors.

The elderly man asked for identification but was ignored, and also for a receipt for the cash which they said they would return with at a later date.

The offenders are believed to have entered and searched the property, but nothing was stolen.

They are described as being white males of stocky build, aged in their 30s, clean shaven and both wearing dark coats and trousers. They left the area in a dark coloured van in the direction of Queen Elizabeth Road.

Anyone with information about this incident or the men involved is asked to contact DC Mick Duffy in the Local Investigations team at Nuneaton on 01926 415000 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
